Visit : Coach Trip to visit Harrison & Harrison, Organ Builders, Durham

8th October 2019

Technical Visit for the Institution of Mechanical Engineers - West Cumbria Area

All our Visits and Lectures Qualify for Continued Professional Developement Points

Description
Cost is £10 per person, payable at time of booking and covers return coach travel.
NOTE: Price is advertised as £8.33 excluding VAT. VAT will be added at the end of the booking to make the price up to £10.

Harrison & Harrison was founded by Thomas Hugh Harrison who had been apprenticed at the age of 12 to the famous organ builder Henry Willis.  On completing his apprenticeship, Harrison moved to work in Bristol before setting up his own firm in Rochdale.  In 1872 the firm moved to Durham, continuing to build organs: the name Harrison & Harrison dates from this time.  The original premises served the firm well until 1996 when it moved into the present new purpose-built facilities at St John’s Road, Durham.

Today Harrison & Harrison employs about 50 workers, and as well as designing and building brand new pipe organs, mainly for cathedrals, churches and other civic buildings round the world, is heavily involved in restoration projects which range from routine maintenance to very major rebuilds.

Notable restorations include Westminster Abbey, and the cathedral organs of Lichfield, Peterborough, Salisbury, Southwark, Winchester, Westminster, Exeter, as well as Kings College Cambridge and the Royal Festival Hall.

The visit will see various stages of organ building, including design, manufacturing, tuning and assembly.  The main part of the workshop will be focussed on the manufacture of parts for the reconstruction of the organ at York Minster.  This is all bench work and is predominantly working with wood.  A separate team will be restoring parts of the organ from St Mary’s Cathedral Edinburgh.  Other teams will be working on site in Lagos, and in Salisbury.

The pipe makers will be restoring York pipework and making some new for the same organ.

"Voicers" will be working through the York pipework, which they listen to on small, skeleton organs in separate areas of the workshop.

H&H's designers will be working on drawings for new organs, which include two instruments for the US.

The visit will also include a demonstration of a fully restored H&H organ.

Numbers are restricted and booking (inclusive of payment) is essential.

Lunch is not provided. A "pit-stop" will be taken on route to allow you to eat a packed lunch or purchase food.

Coach will depart Lakes College West Cumbria at 09:00hrs and pick up at Cockermouth Main Street (outside Boots) at 09:20hrs. Expected return times are 19:10 at Cockermouth, and 19:30.
