Visit to Carr’s Flour Mill, Silloth

5th December 2019

Technical Visit for the Institution of Mechanical Engineers - West Cumbria Area

All our Visits and Lectures Qualify for Continued Professional Developement Points

Jonathan Dodgson Carr founded our company on the principles of quality, innovation and understanding the needs of his customers. More than 180 years later, we see no reason to change a winning formula.

Carr’s Flour Mills is a thriving 21st century business – but with unashamedly old-fashioned values when it comes to looking after the people who matter most. Today we process approximately 300,000 tonnes of wheat a year at our mills at Silloth, Maldon and Kirkcaldy.

We source only the best wheat from home and abroad, and we have invested heavily in the latest milling technology. Our flours are created with attention to detail, supplying everyone from home and independent bakers to retail multiples and major food retailers. And in an often volatile wheat market, our people work closely with our customers to minimise the impact of unexpected price spikes.

Meet at 6.00 p.m.  Carr’s Flour Mills is easily located (bottom of Lawn Terrace, CA7 4AJ) and there is adequate car parking for an evening visit.  Visitors will be met at the gate house and accompanied to the museum where an introductory talk will be given.  Following this there will be a site tour.  Flour milling is a noisy process and hearing protection will be provided as will be coveralls for food safety requirements.  It is recommended that flat ‘sensible’ footwear is worn.  The mill buildings date back to the 1870’s when milling technology differed from today so expect to climb stairs.
