October’s BECBC Member Meeting included a Business Support Group showcase event that exceeded the previous exhibition in scale and scope, energy and enthusiasm. Over 60 exhibition stands showcasing BECBC member companies filled the Energus Atrium (and a side room area) and all of them are involved in delivering professional services to Cumbrian businesses.
As well as the key local accountancy firms and legal practices there were also photographers and videographers, training and development specialists, web and IT advisers, recruitment companies, marketing professionals and businesses supplying almost everything else that a company might need.
“The meeting had attracted a large number of members and the Auditorium at Energus was pretty full throughout the morning,” said Alison Johnston, a BECBC Board member and Director of Dodd & Co Accountants. “A big draw was having Martin Chown and Emma-Jayne Gooch of Sellafield Ltd presenting and answering members questions first thing. That then overflowed into the tremendous interest in the BSG showcase and in presentations from Lakeland Capabilities, Well Whitehaven and Stephen Ratcliffe from the Lake District National Park Authority later in the agenda.”
Joanne Chambers of Lakeland Capabilities spoke about mental health issues in the workplace and the Time to Change pledge ahead of a workshop she’s leading for members later this month; Mark Wear from the Copeland Community Safety Partnership talked about the Well Whitehaven initiative, one of eight pilot schemes in this Public Health England project; and Stephen Ratcliffe from the LDNPA explained the background to the area’s successful bid for World Heritage Site status and the need to disperse the benefits across Cumbria from the core of the Lake District.
