In November 2017, 2nd Year Welding Apprentice, Conor Alexanderof Hertel (a BECBC member), who is based at Sellafield, attended the WorldSkills UK National Finals in Birmingham, Conor secured his place in the National Competition by beating 5 other candidates to first place in the North West Regional Final in May 2017.

The WorldSkills UK Competition is designed to test the skills in four main manual fusion processes. The candidates had to complete eight mandatory welding test pieces within 19 hours ranging from pressure vessels, aluminium and stainless steel vessels, x-ray butt plate and pipes. Conor was up against 10 other finalists from all around the UK and achieved a Gold Medal against tough competition.

Conor has entered the competition three times over the last three years, each time improving his score and capability. The Gold Award is an outstanding result and is testament to Conor’s hard work and support from the Hertel team based on Sellafield Site.

Paul Jones, Workshop Manager stated “this is a fantastic individual achievement by Conor and we are proud of him, but it was also a team performance in getting Conor ready for the competition. Thanks goes to our Inspection Department, Conor's work colleagues and Lakes College, for the preparation in helping Conor to win the SkillWeld Gold Medal”.
