Over 40 members attended the BECBC Business Support Group Meeting at Energus on Friday 3 March to hear Tom Crowe, Head of Procurement at Low Level Waste Repository Limited, explain the site’s Business Services Marketplace and the opportunities for SMEs and microbusinesses to tender for specialist projects.
“We’d invited Tom to speak on this as it’s already proving a useful route into projects on one of the nuclear estate sites in the area, with the added opportunity of gaining access into the rest of the NDA Estate ,” said BSG leader, Alison Johnston of Dodds Accountants. “I’m glad that we persevered to find a convenient date as Tom gave an excellent insight into the thoughts behind and the workings of the Marketplace. Everyone then had a chance to participate in an extended Q&A session that really got down to the nitty gritty of what’s involved in tendering for this sort of work. All in all, it proved a useful meeting for everyone, I think.”
Tom Crowe said: “We’re very keen to make this system work for us at LLW Repository Limited, for local SMEs and for the area. If we can allocate work to specialist companies with the expertise that we need and on our doorstep, the impact of that spend on our Cumbrian communities is much greater too. At present over 50% of those enrolled on the Marketplace system have a Cumbrian postcode and we’re keen to grow that even further.”
