Your Harbour Needs You!

Whitehaven Harbour Commissioners are searching for skilled voluntary non-executive board members to help steer the organisation in its quest to maximise the opportunities that will enable it to re-invest in the jewel of Whitehaven’s crown, the historic Harbour.

As a Statutory Harbour Authority, Whitehaven Harbour Commissioners are responsible for preserving the Trust Port of Whitehaven and operating a diverse range of commercial activities in the town. WHC is a not-for-profit organisation seeking to optimise commercial revenues to enable the continual improvement of the Harbour, its assets and the experience it offers visitors and the local community.

Whitehaven Harbour is located on the North West coast of England and is a safe haven with 400 berths in the Marina and an active sea-fishing community. The first quay was built at Whitehaven in 1634 and it has seen a colourful, and at times dark, history since then, at one point being the UK’s third most important Port.

The setting of Whitehaven Harbour and its close interface with the Georgian town streets means that it plays a key part in the future of the whole town and indeed the West Coast itself. Recent developments have included the Sea Lock that protects the town from tidal flooding, whilst the Commissioners are currently in the build phase of a new Coastal Activity Centre, The Edge.

The Whitehaven Harbour Commissioners Board now has the opportunity to write another exciting and successful chapter in the Harbour’s long and illustrious life as we look at our next stage of growth and development.
