Nuclear Restoration Services (NRS) is undertaking the complex task of decommissioning former Magnox Ltd nuclear power stations, where pressurised ducting systems are supported by spring hangers designed to absorb vibration and thermal movement.
Many of these components, including large constant load spring hangers, still support essential ducting across sites. Each contains significant stored energy, creating potential safety risks if released incorrectly.
As part of the Game Changers innovation programme, NRS is seeking novel solutions to:
Safely immobilise and support structures currently held by spring hangers
Maintain structural stability throughout long-term decommissioning
Ideally enable remote or rope-access application, minimising the need for scaffolding
Reduce risks associated with stored energy and projectile failure
This challenge focuses initially on Hinkley Point A, but successful solutions could have broader application across NRS sites.
