ANNOUNCING UK FUSION ENERGY AND OUR CONSTRUCTION PARTNER ILIOS
UK Industrial Fusion Solutions is becoming UK Fusion Energy, as the STEP programme enters its next phase.
Last week we announced our construction partner, ILIOS (led by Kier Group and NUVIA), who will begin work on the £200m redevelopment of our West Burton site. This marks the moment STEP Fusion moves from research towards delivery.
Our name change also reflects a long-term ambition to lead in the design and construction of commercial fusion power plants, opening the pathway to deliver virtually limitless clean energy.
This announcement follows the publication of the Government’s Fusion Strategy by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, setting out a clear path to commercial fusion energy and signalling renewed pace and purpose for STEP Fusion and the UK’s wider fusion industry.
As UK Fusion Energy CEO Paul Methven said:
“This is the moment we move from research to delivery - setting a clear path to build the UK’s prototype fusion plant at West Burton.”
Over the past year we’ve made strong progress across magnets, the fuel cycle and plasma systems, with 26 patents filed and 67 technical disclosures supporting the development of the STEP baseline design.
As work begins at West Burton, supply chains are starting to mobilise across the East Midlands, Lincolnshire and South Yorkshire, creating new opportunities for skilled jobs, apprenticeships and local businesses.
