Capula receives October safety award from National Grid for the Sellindge High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) converter substation project
Industrial control and automation digital solutions specialist Capula has received a Safety Performance award in October from National Grid for its continued work on the design, manufacture, test, install and commission of the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) System at Sellindge High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) converter substation.
Part of the IFA Interconnector programme, the subsea electricity link between the UK and France, Sellindge plays a vital role in increasing the UK’s energy security, reliability and capacity of cleaner and smarter energy.
Selected as Contractor of the month for October, Capula was nominated for demonstrating excellent safety behaviours and being incident free in the delivery of its activities. Capula has been refurbishing the converter station control room, integrating new and existing technologies into one SCADA and new electronic mimic screen that will be supportable for the next 10 years.
Commenting on the achievement, Tony Noble, Capula’s Senior Project Manager said: “We are so pleased to be recognised for the professionalism and hard work shown by all of our team.
We take our role as principal contractor very seriously, and safety performance underpins everything we do.”
During the award process, Capula was asked to select an individual to receive a special award. Joe Bates, Senior Engineer, was chosen for his excellent safety ethos and safety-first attitude.
Jim Awang, Health and Safety Manager, National Grid said: “We are pleased to present this award to Capula for consistently demonstrating excellent safety on site, keeping their CDM (Construction Design and Management) area in the Control Building well maintained and being incident free in their activities.
We recognise Joe Bates for his commitment to the project and delivery of the highest safety standards at all times.”.

Emma Ford, National Grid Interconnectors Limited (NGIL) Project Director, presented the award to Tony and Joe, alongside Capula’s Principal Contractor Site Manager Andrew Block.
Capula has been supplying substation control systems for over 25 years and has supported National Grid Electricity Transmission since the early 1990’s.
