Cumbria O&M Services Celebrates a Decade of Success with Charity Donation
Cumbria Operations and Maintenance Services (COMS), based in Whitehaven, is proudly celebrating its 10th anniversary, reflecting on a decade of growth, innovation, and community engagement.
Impact and Community Engagement
COMS is a leading provider of maintenance and asset care services in the nuclear and regulated industry sectors. COMS has not only excelled in business but has also made substantial contributions to the West Cumbrian community. Over the past decade, COMS has donated approximately £40,000 to local charities and has actively engaged in social impact initiatives. In celebration of its 10th anniversary, COMS raised over £10,000 for the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) and they’ve since been made a Corporate Partner with the charity.
Natasha Banks, specialist fundraiser at GNAAS, said: “We are thrilled to receive a donation for more than £10,000 from COMS and have them as one of our Corporate Partners. As a charity, we do not receive any government funding and have to raise approximately £8.5m to remain operational, so we are very grateful for their support. This generous donation will help our doctors, pilots and paramedics continue to help critically ill or injured people across the region.”
The commitment COMS has to community welfare is also evident through its environmental initiatives and support for local youth via work experience and apprenticeship programs.
A Journey of Growth and Achievement
Founded in 2014 by Cliff Woodman and Dave Garratt, COMS has grown to over 80 professionals committed to safety, quality, and community impact.
The inception of COMS traces back to when Cliff transitioned from the pharmaceutical industry and joined forces with Dave Garratt, who had extensive experience at Sellafield. Their combined expertise led to the successful execution of the Site Security Enhancements Programme (SSEP) with Atkins Ltd and Sellafield Ltd in December 2014, setting the stage for COMS’s future success.
Since then, COMS has substantially expanded its workforce, achieving significant milestones such as ISO certifications in quality, safety, and environmental management. The company’s resilience was particularly evident during the COVID-19 pandemic, as it adapted through agile working practices and bespoke procedures, ensuring continued growth and service excellence.
Reflections and Looking Ahead
The journey of COMS has been marked by overcoming challenges, from regulatory compliance to navigating project disruptions and resource shortfalls. The support from established companies was crucial in these early stages, laying a strong foundation for growth. COMS’s reputation for professionalism, reliability, and adaptability has enabled remarkable organic growth.
A recent collaboration with Forth Engineering, React Engineering, and CORE Nuclear Solutions, forming the joint venture 'Resolve Engineered Solutions', highlights COMS’s strategic approach to providing end-to-end engineering services.
COMS is also eyeing a permanent residence at Westlakes Science Park near Whitehaven to accommodate future expansion and is exploring new avenues within the nuclear market, including potential partnerships with industry giants.
As COMS commemorates this significant milestone, the company remains committed to delivering high standards of service, understanding client requirements, and adapting to unforeseen circumstances. Looking ahead, COMS aims to make inroads into new market segments, create diverse career pathways, and achieve ambitious sustainability goals.
