Energy Coast UTC Students Gain Global Insights Through Work Experience Placements in Italy and Cyprus!
Energy Coast UTC continues to broaden its students' horizons through its international work experience programme, recently sending students to Italy and Cyprus for once-in-a-lifetime educational placements. These opportunities form part of the school’s commitment to preparing young people for high-level careers in engineering, technology, and the energy sector, on both the local and global stage.
Students in Year 12 studying for their T Levels Engineering, Civil Engineering, Business Studies or Digital encountered a rigorous application process with 30 students in total successfully securing placements in their chosen fields in Italy or Cyprus.
The international placements truly were a once in a lifetime opportunity for students gaining a real insight into their chosen specialisms within the global market. Students had the opportunity to work with architects developing solar-powered transportation systems, with some of the placements enabling students to present their ideas for reducing carbon emissions in urban areas or increasing tourism at the end of the experience. The placements were able to show students how engineering genuinely can change lives.
Head of School, Kerryann Wilson, praised the students and staff involved, stating, “These international placements are about more than travel — they are about giving our students the edge in a competitive global economy. By immersing them in different cultures and real-world engineering challenges, we’re preparing them for the future they deserve.”
Head of Civil Engineering, Lloyd Pittams, who accompanied the students in Italy commented: “"Our students embraced every opportunity presented to them during this incredible experience. Three of them had the privilege of working in a stunning modern building designed by the late, world-renowned architect Zaha Hadid – a landmark set in a redeveloped part of the old town beside the cruise liners. They were challenged to write about local tourism and then translated their articles into Italian, supported by a fluent-speaking mentor – a fantastic way to connect learning with real-world application."
"Finn and Billy gained immersive experience with a construction company, focusing on electrical fit-outs, including design and implementation. Others worked with an architect’s practice specialising in coastal erosion and flood mitigation, while some explored mechanical engineering through motor vehicle maintenance."
"What stood out most was the enthusiasm and professionalism of our students. Morgan Pritt, for example, made a particular effort to speak to locals using the language skills developed during training. These placements offered rich, varied experiences and showcased the commitment and capability of our learners."
Energy Coast UTC plans to continue expanding its international partnerships, offering more students the chance to gain practical skills in global contexts.
