Morgan Sindall lands £35m Sellafield roof rescue

Morgan Sindall has secured a £35m contract to replace 28,500 sq m of failing roofing across two nuclear facilities at Sellafield in Cumbria.

The job covers the Fuel Handling Plant and Site Ion Exchange Effluent Plant, where longstanding water ingress has damaged equipment and raised fears of operational shutdowns.

Sellafield first tendered the refurbishment in 2022 at an estimated £15.5m, warning that repeated patch repairs were no longer economically or operationally viable.

Morgan Sindall has now secured the job through Pagabo’s Major Works Framework after being the sole bidder.

The contractor expects to subcontract 57% of the work, covering roofing materials, removal of existing coverings, installation of the new roof and temporary works.

The replacement roofing system will safeguard personnel and equipment, allowing the two facilities to continue operating into the 2060s and 2070s.

Both buildings date from the 1980s and remain important to Sellafield’s nuclear operations.

The Fuel Handling Plant receives and stores spent nuclear fuel, while SIXEP removes radioactive material from contaminated water.
