NSAN and SIAS Launch New Entry-Level Qualification to Empower Future Talent in the UK Nuclear Sector
NSAN (National Skills Academy Nuclear), in partnership with SIAS, is proud to announce a new route for GAIN Lite learners to achieve formal recognition for their learning. This new qualification has been developed following feedback from organisations using the programme to upskill or transition people into their business.
The introduction of the Level 2 Award in the Introduction to the Nuclear Industry provides a streamlined and accessible qualification that highlights the valuable skills and knowledge gained through the GAIN Lite programme. This entry-level award is designed to support and inspire the next generation of non-technical professionals entering the UK nuclear sector.
Jointly developed by NSAN and SIAS, this qualification offers learners the opportunity to showcase their foundational industry knowledge through a user-friendly online assessment, accredited by the SIAS awarding body. Open to anyone aged 16 and above, the award is ideal for new entrants as no prior learning or experience is assumed, making it widely accessible.
GAIN Lite covers a range of important topics for those entering business and commercial roles in the sector, including: the history and development of the sector, regulatory frameworks, fundamental safety and security principles, basic nuclear science, radiation and contamination control, waste management, emergency procedures, and the importance of professional standards and public perception.
The course is delivered online in a single day by experienced tutors from industry, offering flexibility and making it accessible nationwide.
Tricia Austin, Managing Director of NSAN, said:
“We are pleased to announce the launch of this new qualification in partnership with SIAS. This qualification supports early career development for new entrants and aligns with our mission to strengthen the sector.
With the industry needing 40,000 more skilled professionals by 2030, efficient onboarding and retention are crucial. The GAIN Lite programme and Level 2 qualification offer a comprehensive solution for non-technical roles, preparing new entrants for long-term success.”
Steve Smith, Managing Director of SIAS, said:
“As an Awarding Organisation committed to supporting the nuclear sector, we’re proud to work alongside NSAN to launch this accessible and relevant qualification for new entrants to the nuclear industry, the Level 2 Award in the Introduction to the Nuclear Industry will provide a clear and credible route for learners to have their knowledge formally recognised.
At SIAS, we’re always focused on ensuring that our regulated qualifications genuinely support industry needs — and this modern modular qualification is a strong example of that.
I look forward to continuing to work closely with NSAN to support individuals to take their first step into this vital sector, and in doing so support employers in developing confident, informed new talent.”
