Orano Waste Consultant, Dr. Connor Beer, shortlisted for the European Nuclear Society’s High Scientific Council PhD Award
Dr. Connor Beer, one of Orano’s UK Waste Consultants, has been selected as a finalist for the prestigious European Nuclear Society (ENS) High Scientific Council PhD Award. Connor earned his place in the European competition after winning the Nuclear Institute’s PhD Award earlier this year, becoming the UK’s sole nominee. Chosen from candidates representing ten European countries, he is now one of just four finalists shortlisted by the ENS High Scientific Council.
Connor’s PhD research at the University of Liverpool focused on understanding how advanced nuclear fuel materials respond to radiation, helping to support the development of safer and more efficient next-generation reactors. His work has particular relevance to the UK’s growing nuclear programme, including small modular reactors (SMRs) and advanced fuel technologies. Connor will present his research to leading European nuclear scientists in Brussels in November 2026, with the overall winner announced shortly afterwards.
