Port of Workington shortlisted in major industry awards

The Port of Workington – which is owned and operated by Cumberland Council – has been shortlisted at the upcoming British Port Association (BPA) Annual Awards.  

The prestigious awards celebrate excellence, innovation, sustainability, and outstanding leadership across the UK ports sector.  

The Port of Workington has been shortlisted for the SME Port of the Year award, which recognises small and medium sized port enterprises who have demonstrated excellence in an area of port management such as operational efficiency, stakeholder engagement, development or user/customer relations.  

It is the second year running the west Cumbrian port has been shortlisted for the award and this year it will be up against Dart Harbour and the Port of Inverness for the accolade.  

Barbara Cannon, the council’s Executive member for financial planning and assets, said: "The Port of Workington is a huge asset, not just for west Cumbria but wider Cumberland and the county as whole. We have big ambitions for the port to become a bustling hub for energy production, manufacturing and logistics industries and are working with key partners to make that a reality.  

"Being shortlisted for this award for the second successive year is wonderful news and a real testament to the team at the port and the council officers who support them for their hard work, energy and ambition."  

The port is a key strategic asset for the local area with significant potential to unlock economic growth in the region. In recent years, there has been a multi-million pound investment by council and Government in activities directly related to the port, improving things such as infrastructure, road access and warehouse capabilities.  

Recently a project to clear unused land at the port and prepare it for future development was completed with a new facility, to be run by Cavendish Nuclear, together with its delivery partner Amentum, currently being constructed. The construction and operation of the sodium treatment plant will support skilled jobs both directly and more widely across the supply chain, contributing significantly to the local economy.  

The award winners will be revealed at the BPA Conference Gala Dinner next month.
