Prima Uno Open New Headquarters at Historic Flax Works in Cleator
Prima Uno, the female‑owned and female‑led SME Project Controls and Project Delivery consultancy, is proud to announce the opening of its new headquarters at The Flax Works, Cleator, a site with deep roots in both Cumbrian industrial heritage and the history of women’s rights.
After several successful years at Ingwell Hall, the move marks a significant milestone for the company, reflecting its continued growth and ambition. “This relocation represents far more than just a change of address,” said Managing Director, Sarah Purdham. “The Flax Works carries a remarkable legacy for our region, particularly for women, and we’re honoured to become part of its next chapter.”
A Site Built on Industry — and Women’s Voices
Originally built as a flax mill in 1830, the Cleator Mills site once employed around 600 workers during its early industrial peak. The site is notably remembered for a landmark moment in local history: in 1915, the women working in the flax mill staged a strike that became a significant milestone in the fight for women’s labour rights in West Cumbria.
The mill later became the iconic Kangol hat factory, established in 1938 and eventually recognised as one of Cumbria’s best‑known fashion brands before its closure in 2009.
“Knowing that this building was once powered by the hands and determination of hundreds of women makes our move here incredibly meaningful,” Sarah added. “As a female‑owned and run company, it feels like we’re continuing a legacy.”
A Modern Partnership for the Future
Prima Uno shares the revitalised Flax Works site with React Engineering, who recently moved its headquarters there as part of a wider redevelopment by Genr8 North. The transformation is breathing new life into the historic mill, creating modern commercial spaces designed to support the region’s engineering and project delivery excellence.
“This is a place where heritage and innovation meet,” said Sarah. “We are excited to be at the heart of a development that honours the past while shaping the future of business and engineering in West Cumbria.”
A Heartfelt Thank You to BEC
Prima Uno also expressed its gratitude to BEC, the organisation that previously housed the company at Ingwell Hall.
“We want to sincerely thank BEC for supporting us, looking after us, and providing an excellent environment during our time there,” Sarah said. “Their partnership has played a valued part in our business journey.”
A New Chapter Begins
The move to The Flax Works comes at a time of expansion for Prima Uno, as the business continues to secure new contracts and strengthen its services across project controls, project delivery, and consultancy. The company is optimistic about what lies ahead:
“We’re energised, optimistic, and ready for the next stage,” Sarah said. “This building has seen generations of working people, especially women, shaping the story of Cleator. Now we’re proud to be part of the next era.”
