Dr Chris Hopper: Is Net Zero Possible?

The world needs to reach Net Zero by 2050 to avoid climate catastrophe. The UK has set the highest targets for Green House Gas reductions in the world, with a target of a 78% reduction by 2037. The government has issued a plan “Build Back Greener”, which requires fundamental changes to peoples’ lifestyles and unprecedented investment in carbon reduction. The question to be asked is whether this plan is deliverable, or merely an aspiration?

Dr Chris Hopper Bio:

PhD in Structural Dynamics and 40 years working in the oil industry throughout the world.

Application of new technology in early deep water, subsea and high pressure oil field developments.

Project manager of four major North Sea projects and several multi billion dollar projects in Nigeria, Kazakhstan and Australia.

Director of a Gas to Liquids company that monetized an innovative GTL technology.

Currently Principal Advisor to an Australian Company developing Floating LNG and Offshore CO2 injection.

So what has been the impact to date and what might we expect going forward? An opportunity to find out more about the direction of travel for Cumbria's economy.

Jo Lappin is the Chief Executive of the Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership, responsible for Cumbria’s economic and business growth.

Since March 2020 she has led the Business Cumbria’s economic response and recovery to the pandemic, leading partners on the development and delivery of Restart, Reboot, Rethink – A Plan for Cumbria’s Economic Recovery. She is a member of government’s Local Economic Recovery Group, ensuring that the voice of business informs policy and investment.
