Game Changers Challenge: Automated Deployment Device for Bulk Storage Tank Waste Retrieval

Sellafield Ltd is seeking an innovative automated deployment device and remote control system to support the retrieval of highly active granular waste from Bulk Storage Tanks (BSTs) that are approaching full capacity.

Retrieving this waste is a critical step in enabling Post Operational Clean Out (POCO) and supporting the future management of waste from new storage facilities. The challenge focuses on developing a system that can remotely deploy, position and control a pneumatic conveying vacuum lance, maximising retrieval efficiency while operating safely in a highly radioactive environment.

As part of the Game Changers innovation programme, Sellafield Ltd is looking for solutions that can:

✅ Remotely deploy and control a vacuum lance over distances of up to 19 metres

✅ Reliably retrieve spent clinoptilolite from across the entire tank

✅ Maximise material flow while minimising blockages

✅ Provide intelligent monitoring and feedback to optimise retrieval performance

✅ Be adaptable for future waste retrieval applications, including Magnox sludge

A successful solution could play a key role in supporting Sellafield's future waste retrieval strategy, with the potential for wider deployment across multiple facilities.
