Sellafield Ltd is seeking an innovative deployment device and remote control system to support pneumatic conveying for the retrieval of highly active, friable granular material (Clinoptilolite) from Bulk Storage Tanks (BSTs) approaching full capacity.
Retrieving this waste is needed to enable Post Operational Clean Out (POCO) and could also support the management of waste from future storage facilities. Pneumatic conveying has been identified as the preferred retrieval method due to its environmental advantages and reduced generation of secondary waste.
The deployment device must remotely position and control the retrieval system to maximise efficiency, using monitoring data such as system position, pressure drop and material flow rate. A successful solution could also be adapted for future Magnox sludge retrieval, delivering wider benefits across Sellafield's waste management operations.
