Sunbeams Charity

As Co-Chair of the Social Value Group, I have the privilege of meeting some truly inspiring people who are making a real difference in our community. Recently, I had the opportunity to visit Sunbeams Charity in Penrith, thanks to Jules, who attended one of our Social Value Group meetings and invited us to see the centre. It’s a welcoming, creative space where people of all ages can sing, play music, and take part in activities.

Sunbeams is more than just a music centre, it has a music hall, a sensory room, a recording studio, and meeting and conference spaces available for hire, offering facilities that cater to a wide range of needs. Each month, the charity delivers 100 live community sessions, reaching people across the county and providing opportunities for everyone to engage, create, and connect.

One of the most moving aspects of Sunbeams’ work is their Music for Dignity programme, which supports people living with Alzheimer’s, dementia, and Parkinson’s. A story that really stayed with me was about individuals who can’t remember their own names but can recall every line of a song that once meant something to them. These sessions show the profound power of music to bring back memories, dignity, and joy.

Sunbeams also runs Music for Life sessions for children with disabilities, helping them improve their ability to express, communicate, and engage with others. The impact of these sessions is truly life-changing for the children, their families, and the wider community.

Sunbeams relies on the generosity of individuals and businesses to continue their work. There are lots of ways to get involved, you can volunteer, donate, support their events, or simply help spread the word. Check out their festive plans in the attached Christmas poster – a wonderful way to support their incredible work this holiday season.

Visiting Sunbeams reminded me just how important community spaces like this are. They don’t just offer creative activities; they bring hope, confidence, and joy.
